IHI RWE Alliance for Impact

About

The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) RWE Cross-Project collaboration was established to connect IHI-funded projects that generate, use, or advance real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE). Building on the outcomes of the October 2025 IHI cross-project workshop, participating projects created a collaborative structure designed to strengthen knowledge sharing, improve alignment, and increase the long-term impact of project outputs across Europe. Three working groups were established to focus on portfolio conscientiousness, policy advancement, and sustainability, with regular working group and coordinators meetings to share activities across projects.

The collaboration evolved into the IHI RWE Alliance for Impact, a European Community of Practice that brings together public-private partnership projects focused on advancing the use of real-world evidence. The Alliance seeks to transform individual project outputs into lasting policy, regulatory, and healthcare impact by connecting expertise, methodologies, data assets, and stakeholder engagement activities across projects.

Strategic pillars

The Alliance is organized around three strategic pillars:

  • Portfolio: Creating shared, visible, reusable, and sustainable RWD and RWE assets and resources. Activities include mapping RWE assets across projects, identifying best practices, cataloguing reusable tools.
  • Policy: Advancing a common policy agenda by identifying opportunities for joint activities, developing common messages and position papers, engaging with regulators and HTA organizations, and promoting predictable acceptance and use of RWE in decision-making.
  • Sustainability: Supporting long-term collaboration through the harmonization of methodologies, inventories of data and outputs, common principles for trustworthy evidence generation, and strategies to sustain project impact beyond individual grant lifecycles.

A central ambition of the Alliance is to support a shared European direction on real-world evidence. Alliance members recognize that Europe possesses the expertise, data resources, and scientific capability to lead the trusted use of RWE. However, fragmented approaches across Member States continue to limit the consistent use of RWE in regulatory and health technology assessment (HTA) decision-making. The Alliance therefore advocates for a trusted, consistent, and pan-European framework that enables the responsible generation, assessment, and use of RWE across healthcare systems.

Looking ahead, the Alliance is moving from collaboration to impact. Through strategic planning, cross-project surveys, stakeholder engagement, policy development, and dissemination activities, the Alliance aims to create a coordinated ecosystem that accelerates learning, reduces duplication, strengthens evidence generation, and supports better healthcare decision-making for patients across Europe.
