Participants
The IDERHA project's workshop on the European Health Data Space (EHDS) organized by task 6.5 on the 26th of October 2023, gathered EHDS experts and leading members of IDERHA working in relevant work packages. All IDERHA consortium members were invited, and in total, there were about 50 participants.
Aims
The workshop aimed to provide insights into the draft EHDS legislative proposal and the most recent developments of the EU legislative making process. The workshop further aimed to discuss the potential impact of the EHDS on the implementation of IDERHA deliverables, jointly elaborate on common understandings and key areas of shared concern, and to identify urgent (EHDS-related) topics for further workshops. Thinking about alignments and synergy opportunities is important for the sustainability of IDERHA.
Key findings
The workshop highlighted the significance of considering the developments of IDERHA in the context of EHDS requirements and laid the foundation for future discussions.
- It is crucial for IDERHA to align the platform with the EHDS. IDERHA should have a clear strategy for engagement with EHDS, including how it will interact with EHDS, considering the developing nature of both.
- IDERHA is enabling the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to answer clinical questions and should cover various data types under technical processes and concepts, translating legislation and recommendations into technology.
- The Regulation sets governance rules and IDERHA can prepare itself for these measures without waiting for the full implementation. Data sets should be prepared for future sharing. Quality labelling should be EHDS ready, and the European electronic health record exchange format should be considered. IDERHA should take the legal, semantic, and technical interoperability into account, and data should already be processed using the required EHDS environments.
- IDERHA should bear the EHDS requirements for the technical infrastructure and data access management system aspects in mind when designing its architecture.
- Existing definitions and mechanisms need to be recognized and EHDS should be considered in the context of other initiatives. Continuous monitoring of the developments is required, including ongoing and future projects such as TEHDAS2 and the HealthData@EU Pilot.
