IDERHA for Citizens
IDERHA is a European project that started in April 2023. Its goal is to improve how health data is used so that patients receive better care and medical discoveries can happen faster. The project brings together hospitals, researchers, public organisations, and companies from across Europe to find better ways to safely access, connect, and analyse health data.
Our Vision
IDERHA aims to create a secure European infrastructure where different types of health data can be safely connected, used, and reused. This infrastructure will support medical research and help healthcare authorities make better decisions.
Our Goals
- Create a shared data space that allows hospitals and researchers access to different types of health information in a secure and responsible manner for patients.
- Develop artificial intelligence tools, using lung cancer as a use case, to help detect disease earlier and predict how these might progress.
- Provide a digital tool to help doctors monitor lung cancer patients at home after they leave the hospital.
- Improve and expand international standards for health data.
- Ensure personal health data can be safely reused for research.
- Recommend modern laws and policies that support safe and responsible use of health data across Europe.
Why Focus on Lung Cancer First?
IDERHA is part of the Europe Beating Cancer Plan. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers and is often diagnosed in a late stage. By using artificial intelligence to analyse health data, IDERHA aims to detect lung cancer earlier and improve quality of life for patients. The project will demonstrate that this approach helps doctors and patients make better decisions together and personalise treatment options.
Building a European Health Data Space
IDERHA is helping to build one of the first Europe Health Data Spaces (EHDS) for sharing health data. This supports the European Health Data Space initiative, which will give patients and doctors access to better digital healthcare. Through this work, IDERHA helps speed up the approval of safe and innovative healthcare solutions.
Funding
IDERHA is funded by the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI), a partnership between the European Union and organisations from the life sciences sector. The project has a budget of €42.7 million and runs for five years, from 2023 to 2028.
